Expanding Opportunities. Empowering Young People. Building a Better Future.
At Langa Women Development Initiative (LWDI), we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking cycles of poverty, inequality and exclusion. When children and young people have access to quality education, relevant skills and opportunities to participate meaningfully in society, they are better equipped to build productive lives and contribute to their communities.
Our Education & Youth Development programme promotes access to learning, literacy, skills development, leadership and opportunities that enable young people to reach their potential.
We work with communities, families, schools, young people and relevant stakeholders to address barriers that prevent children and youth, particularly those from vulnerable and underserved backgrounds, from accessing and benefiting from education and development opportunities.

What We Do
1. Education Access & Support
LWDI supports initiatives that help children and young people access and remain in education, particularly where poverty, social barriers or other challenges threaten their educational opportunities.
Our interventions may include:
- Supporting vulnerable learners
- Education assistance initiatives
- School enrolment and retention campaigns
- Community mobilisation for education
- Supporting learning materials and educational resources
- Promoting inclusive and equitable access to education
We believe that every child should have a fair opportunity to learn and develop, regardless of their social or economic circumstances.
2. Literacy & Foundational Learning
Strong literacy and foundational learning provide the basis for lifelong education and participation in society.
LWDI supports literacy initiatives that promote:
- Reading and writing skills
- Basic numeracy
- Early learning
- Learning support for children who are falling behind
- Community awareness of the importance of foundational education
- Inclusive learning opportunities
We work with communities and education stakeholders to encourage environments where children can learn, grow and thrive.
3. Scholarships & Education Assistance
For some children and young people, financial constraints can make education difficult or impossible to pursue.
Where resources and partnerships permit, LWDI supports education assistance initiatives designed to reduce financial barriers and help vulnerable learners remain in school.
Our support may include educational materials, learning resources and other forms of assistance identified through community needs assessments.
4. Skills Development
Education should prepare young people not only for academic progression but also for productive participation in the economy.
LWDI promotes practical and relevant skills development that can improve young people’s employability, entrepreneurship and capacity to pursue sustainable livelihoods.
Areas may include:
- Vocational and technical skills
- Entrepreneurship
- Digital literacy
- Communication skills
- Leadership development
- Career awareness
- Financial literacy
- Life and employability skills
5. Youth Leadership & Participation
Young people are not simply beneficiaries of development—they are important actors in shaping their communities.
LWDI creates opportunities for young people to develop leadership abilities, express their views and participate constructively in community development.
We promote:
- Youth leadership
- Civic participation
- Peer education
- Community volunteering
- Decision-making skills
- Advocacy and social responsibility
- Youth-led initiatives
Our goal is to help young people become confident, responsible and constructive contributors to society.
6. Youth Empowerment
LWDI works to strengthen young people’s ability to identify opportunities, overcome barriers and make informed decisions about their futures.
Our youth empowerment activities may address:
- Personal development
- Career guidance
- Entrepreneurship
- Digital opportunities
- Economic empowerment
- Life skills
- Mentorship
- Community engagement
We particularly recognise the importance of creating opportunities for young people who are disadvantaged or excluded from mainstream development opportunities.

Our Approach
LWDI’s education and youth development work is grounded in the belief that lasting change requires more than simply putting children in classrooms or young people through training programmes.
We seek to:
Remove barriers – identify and address social and economic factors that prevent children and youth from accessing opportunities.
Build capabilities – provide knowledge, skills and practical experience.
Promote inclusion – ensure vulnerable and underserved groups are not left behind.
Encourage participation – give young people meaningful opportunities to contribute to decisions and community initiatives.
Connect learning to opportunity – promote skills that can support further education, employment and entrepreneurship.
Work with communities – engage parents, educators, community leaders and other stakeholders in creating supportive environments for learning and youth development.
Who We Serve
Our education and youth initiatives may prioritise:
- Children from vulnerable households
- Out-of-school and at-risk children
- Girls facing barriers to education
- Young people from underserved communities
- Young women and men seeking skills and opportunities
- Students requiring education assistance
- Youth interested in leadership and community development
Specific beneficiaries and activities depend on the needs of each community and project.
Building Pathways to Opportunity
LWDI sees education and youth development as interconnected.
A child needs access to education and foundational learning. A young person needs relevant skills, confidence and opportunities. Communities need young people who are equipped to participate positively in economic, social and civic life.
Our approach therefore seeks to build a pathway:
Access to Education → Learning → Skills → Leadership → Opportunity → Empowerment
Our Vision
We envision communities where every child and young person has the opportunity to learn, develop relevant skills, exercise leadership and build a productive and meaningful future.
